Hi LinkedIn. It’s me again, the “Bad Boy of Marketing”. Let’s chat about this whole “hybrid” work farce. Logically, this is such a big steaming pile of cow patties. Here’s why. By having employees work remotely some and from the office some, here’s the conclusions companies are projecting: 1) Employees can be productive remotely, or they would require only in office. 2) Companies do not feel that technological tools help teams collaborate enough to be impactful, even if they themselves sell that to other companies. Hence the in office requirements. Here’s where it breaks down even more: 1) Some people work better around other people. Some people work better in their own space that they can control. Some people enjoy commuting to and from work as a way to get in to or out of “work mode”. Some people enjoy not having the stress of commuting and getting to work on time. Rather than help all of these groups, hybrid makes some of the week uncomfortable for everyone. 2) If you allow some days from home, there is no reason not to allow all days from home with the occasional in person for team outings/offsites etc. and even then, those can be done virtually. If you don’t trust your employees to be productive remotely, why are you allowing it at all? 3) Cat is out of the bag. Way too many employees have done the remote thing and saw their stress levels drop, productivity increase, and their ability to juggle everything get smoother. 4) LETTING EMPLOYEES WORK REMOTELY WILL BE THE NEW RECRUITMENT DIFFERENTIATOR. In an era, especially in tech, where we are seeing a purposeful squishing of salaries (it’s happening) and an “employer” market, potential employees will not be applying to roles based on if they are hybrid, in office, or remote. If they have no choice (lay offs for instance), they may take your in office or hybrid role while continuing to look for the remote. On the flip side, people that prefer in office will do the same. Here’s the answer, since this bad boy likes to be helpful. Ditch this whole hybrid thing. It sucks, is illogical, is there only to provide the illusion of modernization of the workplace while clinging to archaic habits and values, and just doesn’t help anyone. Instead, your hybrid model should be this: “this role is available as either in office or remote. If offered the position, you will be able to select which model you prefer.” Really not tough. Quick housekeeping notes and some full disclosure. I’ve been asked by MANY people, and so many from Microsoft, where all my posts have been around Neurodiversity. There’s also been questions on if I will post more on AI. First of all, thank you to all of you that have asked me privately about this as it came at a time where I questioned if I’m the lone person on the island. It has been awe inducing with how much my little LinkedIn posts have evidently impacted folks and I have been evidently voicing that which the voiceless have not been able to. I am humbled at the outpouring of support from each and every one of you (both at Microsoft and from elsewhere). The quick answer is that I have to be careful with what I post here. I did not realize how many eyes are watching and the conclusions being made that are negatively affecting me. While I see a STRONG convergence amongst Marketing/Marketing Ops, AI, and Neurodivergence, people that are in the position to make my life uncomfortable do not. I will focus more and more on marketing/marketing ops due to this. The conclusion has been that I am more interested in these other topics than I am in the items I am tasked to work on. Eventually, I will post more showing those connective tissues amongst those topics. For now, I have to establish some baseline around marketing ops and lead folks down the path my brain has gone to connect the other two topics. I wish people knew the crooked path my career has taken so they would understand I am leveraging some unique experiences and trying to show empathy and understanding to what they are going through and not trying to “steal the spotlight”. I hope you all understand that, to survive, I must curb my LinkedIn topics. I will be working on a video “channel” once I get the equipment together. All of that will get done on weekends and outside of any workday timing, of course, and so may take time (and money which is in short supply). I turn 50 at the end of this month (Oct 24th) and I feel that I am in a spot where I need to continue mentoring others and handing out what’s in my head. I am no longer in a time of my life where there is hope of obtaining a position to drive the level of improvements that I feel are possible and so I will share what I can so others can do so. I’ve long ago shed any ego that I may have had, despite folks opinions to the contrary. Hopefully, others can do the same. There are a lot of people that I have come across in my work life that I have helped get on a different path and they have crushed it (many are following me here and you know who you are and I’m very proud of all you’ve done if that means anything). I’m talking transformational level stuff. I’ve never tried that for myself and it’s too late at this stage. I have to chase the paycheck, get my family out of debt, and set my kids up for success. Hopefully, I can help some others along the way and find little chocolate chips of fulfillment in the giant cookie of work.

🎵 “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again.” 🎵 Sometimes, life throws us into the deep end at work – endless tasks, tight deadlines, and stress levels through the roof. I’ve been there recently, feeling overwhelmed and wondering if I could keep pushing forward. It was a difficult and demanding time. But then, I remembered a classic song by Nat “King” Cole that says it all: “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again.” These words aren’t just lyrics – they’re a mindset.
